How this gravel calculator works
Gravel is quoted by volume or by weight, depending on the supplier. The calculator finds the volume from your area and depth, then converts to weight using a density figure. Most crushed stone and gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard (1.6–1.7 tonnes per cubic meter); pea gravel runs a little lighter and dense crushed granite heavier. Adjust the density field if your supplier states a different figure.
How deep should gravel be?
Walkways and decorative beds need 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm). A gravel driveway is built in layers: 4 inches of large base stone, 3–4 inches of medium stone, and a 2–3 inch top layer of smaller crushed gravel — 8 to 10 inches (20–25 cm) total for a new driveway. A shed or hot tub pad is typically 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of compacted crushed stone.
Crushed stone vs. pea gravel
Crushed stone has angular edges that lock together when compacted, making it the right choice for driveways, bases and pads. Pea gravel is rounded and stays loose — comfortable underfoot and attractive in beds and paths, but it migrates and ruts under vehicle traffic. If the surface needs to bear load, choose crushed, ideally with fines (often sold as 'crusher run' or '¾ minus').
Ordering tips
Suppliers usually deliver by the ton or tonne with a minimum load, and short loads carry a fee. Add 5–10% for compaction and settling — crushed stone compacts noticeably when tamped. If you're between quantities, round up: leftover gravel keeps forever and always finds a use.
