How this sod calculator works
Sod is sold by the roll — most commonly 2×5 ft, covering 10 square feet (about 0.9 m²) — and by the pallet, which typically holds 450 square feet (about 42 m²). The calculator adds a small waste allowance for trimming along beds, walks and curves; 5% covers a normal yard, 10% a yard with lots of curved edges.
Measure irregular lawns in rectangles
Break the lawn into rectangles, calculate each and add them up. For circular areas, use radius × radius × 3.14. It is better to round up — sod is perishable, and a supplier run for two missing rolls costs more than the rolls.
Sod is a same-day material
Order for delivery the day you install. Rolls heat up and die on the pallet within 24–48 hours, faster in summer. Prepare the soil completely before delivery: graded, raked, lightly compacted and moist. Stagger the joints like brickwork, butt the seams tight without stretching, and water immediately — daily for the first two weeks.
