How Many Cubic Feet in a Cubic Yard?

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. A yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet — about 0.765 cubic meters.

This is the conversion behind almost every bulk-material calculation: measure length × width × depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for the cubic yards that suppliers quote.

Handy anchors: a standard wheelbarrow holds 3–5 cubic feet, so a cubic yard is roughly 7–9 wheelbarrow loads. A full-size pickup bed holds about 2 cubic yards of mulch but only around 1 yard of heavier gravel or soil by weight.
